“And a very good morning to you as well sir,” Nathan replied cheerfully.
“You sound awfully chipper today.”
“I certainly am. It’s just a damn fine day, don’t you think?” he said, looking back towards Joanna, his shirt sliding up to reveal her perfect ass as she leaned over to check on the eggs.
“Well, it’s about to get a whole lot better. The grant came through Nathan. It came through.”
Nathan’s heart started to beat faster.
“Which grant?” He knew exactly which one Michaels was talking about, but he was desperately hoping it was something else.
“The Hermansky-Pudlak research grant! You can work on a treatment to your heart's content now. I’ve even had it approved for you to run some tests on that girl, Joanna. I know it’s not ideal considering your history with her, but I think her father will be on board if he knows that this could lead to a cure. It’s such a rare syndrome, we’ll need all the test subjects we can get for study purposes. Nathan? Are you there?”
Nathan was standing in shocked silence. This was great news. Anything that would help Joanna recover and extend her life expectancy was good news. But it also meant he would be working at Mt Sinai for a long time. And that Joanna would be his patient for months, potentially years.
He could not date a patient. It was out of the question. It would cross so many spoken and unspoken lines, and would risk the legitimacy of the study as a whole.
“Yes, sorry Michaels, I’m here. That’s great! That’s fantastic news. Thanks so much for calling.”
He got off the phone as quickly as he could and sat down on the couch.
“Everything okay?” Joanna asked, putting a plate of bacon and eggs down in front of him.
“Yes! That was Michaels, just calling with a- a question about a patient. This looks amazing,” he said, fiddling with his fork, ashamed that he was lying to her already, unwilling to break her heart.
“You’re amazing,” she said, her perfect face smiling ear to ear.
As he leaned in and kissed her, he knew he had a choice to make.
